Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga or Ashtanga Yoga is a system of yoga popularized by K. Pattabhi Jois based in Mysore, southern India. Pattabhi Jois began his yoga studies in 1927 with Krishnamacharya at the age of 12, and by 1948 had established an institute for teaching the specific yoga practice known as Ashtanga.
Power Yoga, Dynamic Yoga, Rocket Yoga are derivative of the Ashtanga Yoga series.
On the whole the practice is athletic in the early stages, gradually becoming lighter and spiritual as the practitioner becomes stronger, more supple and starts to incoorporate the breath Ujjayi, the Bandhas (locks) and the drishtis (external focus).
Ashtanga Yoga is taught as an abbreviated form of the Primary series at the DW, Barrow in Furness.
